Why Parkville losses escalate quickly

Extraction and drying come after that. It is a reversal of the usual order and it occasionally means standing water sits a little longer than we would like, but a wet floor is recoverable and a thawed sample collection is not. We will make that call and explain it.

Working with facilities and research staff

Research buildings have two sets of stakeholders with genuinely different priorities. Facilities want the building dry, safe and repaired. Research groups want access to their space and their equipment as soon as it is safe, and they usually understand risks to their own work far better than we do.

We coordinate with both. Before we set up drying in a laboratory we ask what is temperature or humidity sensitive, what cannot be moved, and what is running that must not be interrupted. That conversation takes ten minutes and routinely changes the plan for the better.

A leak is threatening our cold storage. What happens first?

Protection before extraction. We divert and bund to keep water away from freezers and sample stores, and we work with your facilities team on whether power to that area is at risk. Standing water on a floor is recoverable; a sample collection that has thawed is not, so we deliberately handle them in that order.

Can drying equipment affect sensitive instruments?

It can. Aggressive drying drops humidity quickly and moves a lot of air, and both matter to some analytical equipment. Tell us what is in the room and what its operating range is, and we will design the drying around it — slower, more contained, or excluding that space entirely and drying the surrounding structure instead.

Do you work to laboratory containment protocols?

Yes, and we take them from the facility rather than assuming. Movement routes, waste handling, what equipment may enter a controlled space and what must be decontaminated on the way out all get agreed with the facility before we start. If your building has a biosafety officer, we would like them involved early.

How do you handle a leak above a teaching space during semester?

Much the same as any occupied building — contain the smallest workable area, keep the rest running, and do the disruptive work outside teaching hours. University timetables are quite rigid, so we plan around the published schedule rather than asking for it to be moved.
