Term breaks are the best opportunity we get in an education building — empty, unrestricted access, no timetable to work around, and the ability to run equipment continuously. A job that would take three weeks around a live timetable can often be completed inside a break.
Where a loss happens mid-term the calculation changes. We contain and stabilise immediately to stop the damage getting worse, then complete the disruptive work at the next available break if the affected space can be taken out of use safely. That is usually cheaper and less disruptive than fighting the timetable for a month.
A sprung timber sports floor is a layered system: a wear surface over battens or a resilient layer over a slab, with a void beneath. Water gets into that void and stays there, and drying the surface does nothing at all for it.
These floors have to be dried from beneath, which usually means creating access points and running a dedicated drying setup into the cavity over an extended period. It is slow and it is worth doing properly, because a sprung floor that was not dried correctly cups, lifts and eventually has to be replaced at many times the cost of the drying.
Working in a school while students are present brings requirements that most commercial sites do not have. Our technicians hold the relevant working with children clearances, and we work to the school’s own site access and supervision arrangements.
Practically, that also means equipment and hoses have to be secured and inaccessible, work areas properly hoarded rather than taped off, and any hazardous materials kept off site or locked. A taped barrier is not adequate containment in a primary school corridor.

Sixty hours is long enough for water to travel well beyond the visible damage and for mould to begin establishing, so we scope a late-discovered event differently from a fresh one. We look further from the source than the staining suggests, and we treat microbial growth as a present issue rather than a future risk.
