How do you dry a wet or flooded carpet?

Professional wet carpet drying starts with extracting standing water from the carpet and underlay, then lifting the carpet where needed so the underlay and subfloor can be dried. Air movers and dehumidifiers control evaporation, and moisture readings continue until the floor covering and substrate meet drying goals. Can flooded carpet be saved?

Often yes, when the water is clean (IICRC Category 1, such as a burst supply pipe) and extraction starts within 24–48 hours, with no mould or odour and a sound underlay and subfloor. Category 2 water makes salvage harder: the carpet may be cleanable, but absorbent underlay is often removed. How long does wet carpet drying take?

Extraction is typically completed on the first attendance. Controlled drying with air movers and dehumidifiers commonly runs for three to five days with daily moisture monitoring. Time depends on how saturated the carpet is, construction (broadloom over underlay versus carpet tile), water category, and how long it sat wet. Moisture trapped under a dense carpet-tile backing can take longer because it evaporates slowly against the slab.

What is the mould risk if wet carpet is left to dry on its own?

Mould spores can begin germinating on wet materials within 24 to 48 hours, and visible colonies commonly appear within about three to seven days if the moisture stays. Carpet and underlay are organic food sources, so surface drying without extracting the underlay and subfloor leaves trapped moisture that can still grow mould.
